The easiest ways to save money are becoming more important to folks these days...but some methods have always been available... why not use them every day?
Two incidents last weekend bring this to mind. The first was a TV program that showed a single mother of four that was stating how tough it was for her to feed her family. This is a common situation these days. The woman tearfully held up a few coupons and said she was having to use them (coupons) for the first time. Her story was sad but I cringe at all the money she has wasted by not using coupons all along.
Coupons are literally free money. The Wednesday and Sunday paper is treated like money in our house. The newspapers sell the ads to grocery stores, the grocery stores get the coupons from the manufacturers...and the holder of the coupons saves a bundle.
The second incident was overhearing a cell phone conversation in the local library, which we have always utilized. Another woman was complaining how tough it was to make ends meet. "We had to give up the movie channels on cable, and we are going to the library to check out DVDs and books." Why was the woman paying for movie channels when you can check out DVDs free at the library? The DVD selection at the library was extensive.
Both incidents illustrate that the easiest ways to save money is to first use what is available and free for the taking. Coupons and using the library should be a way of life for all folks.
This downturn in the economy will not last forever...it would be nice if habits formed in hard times would be continued in the good times..
